2011 Tax Incentives Help Distribution Centers Enhance Performance Using Automated Bar Code Systems

New tax benefits increase the affordability of automated bar code, print and apply, and sortation systems, which improve efficiency and increase throughput of distribution operations.

PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 7, 2011) Two new U.S. tax incentives, the 2010 Tax Relief Act and the Small Business Jobs Act, reduce the cost of implementing new automatic identification systems that manage bar code scanning, labeling, and sortation. These solutions help distribution centers (DCs) improve the speed and accuracy of their day-to-day operations through automation.

“During the recession, many companies were unable to make improvements in the performance of their DCs,” commented Pratap Chakravarthy, director of marketing at Accu-Sort. “As the economy recovers, DCs are in a better position to invest in bar code systems that expand capacity and increase efficiency. We expect the availability of tax credits to encourage this trend.”

  • In late 2010, the 2010 Tax Relief Act and the Small Business Jobs Act were signed into law.

  • Through Accelerated Bonus Depreciation, companies realize tax savings almost immediately instead of amortizing it over many years.

  • Companies or investments that do not qualify for the Accelerated Bonus Depreciation may still qualify for an immediate write-off through the Small Business Jobs Act. This incentive allows qualifying companies to expense equipment immediately.

  • For companies to take advantage of these tax incentives on their 2011 tax returns, equipment must be put in service before December 31, 2011.

DC managers should consult Accu-Sort® regarding its full spectrum of automated identification solutions that provide reliable bar code scanning, label print and apply, and sortation. Accu‑Sort’s high-efficiency bar code scanners include the AccuLazr™AL5010, a new line of compact mid-range laser scanners, and the AccuVision® AV6010 long-range camera bar code scanner, which goes beyond bar codes by with options for side-by-side package detection and integrated certified dimensioning.
